Thanks to all who traveled to Everett to attend the 124th annual WNPA convention, Oct. 6-8, 2011. Details about our well-received convention sessions and presenters are in the convention brochure. Bill Forhan, WNPA 1st vice president and publisher of NCW Media, Leavenworth, led the planning efforts.
Manfred Tempelmayr of Sound Publishing received the Miles Turnbull Master Editor/Publisher Award, and the Dixie Lee Bradley Award was presented to Linda Chittim of Beacon Publishing.
Dan McDougall of the North Kitsap Herald, Poulsbo, was presented with a plaque and prize for the logo he designed for WNPA's 125th anniversary. Currently available are anniversary logo buttons (1.25" dia., $1) and handsome blue t-shirts with the logo in white (size large, $12). Contact Mae Waldron for details.
Keven Graves, WNPA 2nd Vice President and publisher of Nisqually Valley News, Yelm, chairs the 2012 Convention & Workshops Committee.
The 123rd annual convention, held Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Wenatchee Coast Center Hotel, drew publishers and other representatives of more than 70 community newspapers across Washington state. Jana Stoner, publisher of the Northern Kittitas County Tribune, Cle Elum, chaired the Convention & Workshops Committee. Lavonne Saunders of the Ritzville-Adams County Journal received the Dixie Lee Bradley Award.
More than 200 participants attended the 122nd annual convention, held Oct. 1-3, 2009, at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia. Convention & Workshops Committee chair was Manfred Tempelmayr, president of Sound Publishing Inc., Poulsbo. Dave Pinkham, retired publisher of the Stanwood/Camano News, received the Miles Turnbull Master Editor/Publisher Award. The Freedom's Light Award was presented to Frank W. Garred, former publisher of The Port Townsend Leader and founding director of the Washington Coalition for Open Government.

Meet with other publishers, the people who understand what drives your business, on March 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Issaquah for a WNPA Publishers Round Table. Debbie Berto, 1999 WNPA Past President and publisher of Issaquah Press, Sammamish Review and SnoValley Star (Snoqualmie), is hosting the event.
Attendees will select discussion topics at the beginning of the day from ideas they submit when registering to attend. Some options are community service, staffing, revenue, and your newspaper's online presence, but all registrants are encouraged to suggest current topics of concern.
Register by March 9 with Visa or MC. Cost is $20/person. Attendees will receive an email on March 13 with details on the location and no-host lunch.

The hardest part: Covering trauma
Reporters and editors at WNPA-member newspapers are invited to a March 30 teleconference with Roger Simpson, founding director of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma and a nationally recognized expert on media ethics and trauma. His books include “Covering Violence: A Guide to Ethical Reporting about Victims and Trauma,” with William Cote, published by Columbia University Press (2000, 2006). Simpson currently is a journalism professor at University of Washington, Seattle.

Members of WNPA and Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington gather each year in Olympia to meet with the state's elected officials and legislative leaders. Rowland Thompson, the executive director of Allied, and Bill Will, WNPA executive director, provide a review of bills of interest to newspapers being floated during the legislative session.
